History; Approximately fifteen Turns ago, as the red star began to draw near for its Tenth Pass, a group of holdfolk began experimenting on the invaluable chemical agenothree. With the new information gathering from AIVAS, these holdfolk were, perhaps, a bit too confident in their research. They began merging the chemical with other ores and organic material, hoping to create a more efficient line of defense against the threads. They had grown tired of having to support Weyrs as dragon population skyrocketed in response to the upcoming Falls.
They were not successful, and thus were burdened with hoards of failed chemicals. These unwanted products eventually seeped into the ground, and into the water table. Like wildfire, the strange new chemical added weird compounds into the water, full of strange, chemically altered metals and the bacteria that came with fermentation.
Although there results did not immediately show, the threat came several years later. People were stricken by a new type of fever, named Secus Fever, classified by yellowing of the skin, dilating of the pupil, as well as the onset of slowly worsening gashes in the skin that bled and pussed at the slightly irritation. Perhaps the worst of the symptoms was madness, driving the stricken to near insanity until they died of infection or took their own lives.
However, it got worse. Dragons were stricken by the disease more hastily than humans were. Bacteria spread from lacerations to healthy dragons, carrying traces of the chemical with it. The chemicals seemed to strengthen the disease, causing a Pern-wide epidemic to occur. Dragons and their riders were killing themselves left and right, obliterating entire weyrs.
Soon, there were only three Weyrs left, and less than three hundred dragons to fight the thread that would soon fall. Only three golds remained, one already showing early signs of fever. There were questions that one of the others was infertile. However, the fever-stricken gold rose and was caught. Her winning suitor inevitably came down with the sickness and died shortly after. However, as the queen's condition worsened, she clutched approximately five turns ago.
It was a small clutch of only 12 eggs. Four did not hatch, two betweened after birth, gashes marking their youthful hides. However, the other six were healthy, including a bronze, a lavender, two greens, one blue, and to everyone's relief, a gold! A new hope spread through Pern, although it was quickly ended by the clutchmother's trip between. The new color was soon followed by the hatching of two others: Rubies and Mottleds. These mutations were very rare and completely new.
The young gold impressed to a young woman named Alaizabel. Seemingly immune to the disease, they grew. Once mature, Alaiza and Aevirynth fled in the dead of night alongside 30 seemingly immune dragons and sought to found another weyr. They went back in time, establishing a Weyr in the far northwest, hoping to be isolated and kept a secret from the rest of Pern. They called it Praesto.
A successful, twenty-four egg Hatching later, Praesto is barely clinging to survival--but it's better off than all the other Weyrs. It now has two gold dragons, possibly the only two immune to the deadly Secus, and two of the gentler lavenders, and it is about to be discovered that they can also clutch. Will that be enough to save Pern?
The current weyrlings don't want to wait two years to find out whether they can repopulate Pern. Under new goldrider Elanor, they are planning to go between times to mature. Will the Weyr Leadership let them take such a gamble?
Answer Alaiza's call and become the hope of Pern!
