Character Info:
Name: Timozel (T'zel)
Age: 17
Gender: male
Sexual Orientation: closeted homosexual
Rank: Candidate
Color Preference: Brown, Blue, Red
Appearance:
Timozel is not a fighter. He does not have the brute muscle required to physically fight with anyone taller than about five feet tall, which basically puts him at a disadvantage with about everyone. He does make up for it with speed and reaction time. Turns of riding runners gave him lean, fast muscles used to hard work. The only part of his body that is defined is his thighs, which are trademark of a rider. He doesn't even have the capability to develop bulging muscles, which he hated a couple Turns back. He is about six foot two, and stopped growing a Turn back.
On visible skin, Timozel bears the tanned glow of someone who has spent a lifetime outside in the South. His tan line is very strange, being that he wears long pants almost exclusively. His legs are barely brown, but his face and arms are very dark. Once every few sevendays, he'll go swimming and get an all-over tan, but it's not often and besides, he doesn't like swimming. He sinks like a rock.
Timozel has never been and never will be a person you avoid solely on looks. He looks like someone you could talk to forever and he'd listen, due to the softer angled of his face. He stands right on the line between approachable and feminine, though, and depending on how he dresses and if he messes with his hair, he could cross the line and look very strange.
His hair shares his approachable appearance. Being brown, wavy, and not prone to "bad hair days," it requires almost no maintenance besides washing, which suits Timozel perfectly. He does cut it so it stays out of his face, but depending on who does it, the style goes from borderline ugly to quite nice. What really makes his hair stand out are his eyes. His eyes aren't ice-blue pools of depth, but he is very proud of them. Timozel had hazel-brown eyes with abundant green flecks, which seem to make his hair color more intense.
Personality: Timozel learned very early that if you look submissive, you act submissive, and you are taken to be submissive. Therefore, he always carries himself with an air of dominance. It's not conscious anymore; he just does it. He's been called out for it more than once, and he tries to stop looking like he's better than you, but it doesn't take long before he gives up. A habit started over ten Turns ago is very hard to break, and honestly? he doesn't think he wants to.
Timozel has no problem with authority when the authority makes sense and is correct. He also has no problem with taking charge himself if he could do it better. Often, he doesn't just offer suggestions, but actually take over the leadership. He doesn't need to be a leader, but he will step up if given the chance and no one else more qualified is there.
Timozel has a very active imagination, although his rational brain often discards the ideas as soon as they come up. He's the one in the group who says "Hey, what about... no, never mind." It gets annoying if you're not used to it, and often people press him to disclose the bad idea. Generally, it's better to ignore it than to let Timozel explain his entire idea.
While Timozel is good with children, he's better with adults. He speaks very rapidly, which children generally don't like or understand. He is used to rapid-fire conversations and occasionally arguments, which means he interrupts unless he tries not to. Which, like his dominant attitude, is very hard to break.
In addition to his quick manner of speaking, Timozel is prone to very intense bursts of emotion. He's easily riled up, but he doesn't stay that way for more than a day if it's really bad. Usually, he's quite happy, though.
Although he tries not to show it, Timozel is very scared of being alone for long periods of time. He will never let someone go willingly for any reason. He also is prone to doing things without thinking, although he usually catches himself before he really gets in trouble.
Due to growing up around runners, he is fantastic on runnerback and has incredible balance. He doesn't fall off of anything, and rarely trips due to heightened coordination. He has a way with animals, especially trainable ones.
Timozel is very sociable, and doesn't hesitate to talk to anyone. He's quite polite unless you're not polite to him, and always very respectful of his elders or anyone higher ranked than he is. He has a very good sense of when to stop pushing for information. Timozel is fond of having insult contests for fun. He won't start one with someone who he doesn't think will have fun with it.
Timozel has an uncanny ability to know when someone is lying. He doesn't know the truth, he just knows when you're lying. 99% of the time, he's right, too.
History: Iderv and Rhili had loved each other since they met at age 15, but they waited to get married until they had their own land. The pair were incredible runner trainers, and even better at breeding. They sold runners across Pern, but due to Iderv's bad accounting skills, they remained middle-class.
Rhili had not wanted children, since she had long ago been told she could not have children. Iderv, although he did want a little boy, went along with it and didn't complain.
Rhili was sick for a few sevendays about a Turn after their marriage, but there was a flu going around the Hold and neither worried much. The illness went away quickly and was forgotten. She gained a little weight, but that was also dismissed since there was quite a bit of stress at that time.
About seven months after her initial sickness, Rhili fell off a runner with the worst stomach pains of her life. Iderv carried her to a Healer, and it was a total surprise when he announced she was having a baby boy. Neither of them had any idea Rhili was pregnant.
The child, Timozel, survived, even though he didn't have the lavish baby gifts usually given. Rhili was met with disbelief when she said she didn't know she was pregnant, but she lived.
Surprisingly, the birth seemed to reboot Rhili's system. She menstruated regularly for the first time, and two years later she was pregnant again with Timozel's little sister Lia.
Both practically grew up on runnerback, which was not uncommon for the Hold at the time. Timozel was given a small runner to ride when he was five, and the child spent all the time he could on that pony. He owes his life to the bad-tempered runner on multiple occasions, like the time her rode too close to a cliff and nearly fell off.
When the disease reached a neighboring Hold, Timozel's parents grabbed the most valuable runners, Timozel and Lia, and some food and rode as far and as fast as they could to try and escape the death sentence. This turned out to be a very good move, since no one in the family was infected.
Life was very difficult for them for the three months they stayed away from civilization. Food was difficult to come by, and the runners were skinny by the time the family returned to the Hold. They found a grand total of 20 people alive.
Very slowly, the Hold was returned to a workable state. Survivors from surrounding minor Holds came, and the population grew until there were enough people to establish leadership and begin trade with others again.
Timozel received the first foal born the Turn he turned 12, a tradition begun with Iderv's parents. It was a big chestnut mare, very fit for riding. With careful instruction from his parents, Timozel trained the mare whom he called Asame. She became his best friend and partner. He trusted her with everything.
For four long Turns, the family lived in quiet. Nothing really happened, except for Lia's gift of a bay colt called Rayll when she turned 12. Timozel went through a brief rebellious period, but that passed quickly when he found that it didn't make much sense to be mean to his parents.
The family heard of Vallenth's Flight the day Timozel was Searched. He didn't want to leave his family behind, and flat-out refused until the rider said he could bring his runner with, if he was willing to ride her to the Weyr. He was ready to go in a matter of minutes.
